Sun Atlas shows the typical weather for every day of the year – not a forecast. Move the slider to a date and the map shows how the weather usually is around that time, averaged over the years 2023, 2024 and 2025.

What the views show

Temperature
Average daily high (maximum air temperature at 2 m).
Sun & rain
Combination of average cloud cover and the share of rainy days (days with at least 2 mm of precipitation).
Good weather
A simple score from 0 to 10: highest for daily highs of 22–30 °C, few rainy days and little cloud. Below 10 °C and above 38 °C the score drops to zero.

Method

Source data are daily statistics from the ERA5 reanalysis (daily maximum temperature, daily mean total cloud cover, daily total precipitation), aggregated to a 0.5° grid (about 50 km). Each day on the map is the average over a 7-day window (the day ±3 days) across the three years.

Limitations

ERA5 is a model-based reconstruction of past weather, not a set of station measurements. Values describe a whole grid cell, so mountains, coasts and cities can differ noticeably from local conditions. ERA5 tends to report light rain too often, which is why a rainy day is counted from 2 mm. Three years are a short period; individual unusual years influence the result. All information is provided without warranty.

In short

Sun Atlas has no user accounts, no contact form, no advertising, no cross-site tracking and sets no cookies. To count visits we use cookieless, anonymous statistics from Cloudflare. Your browser has to connect to Cloudflare (hosting and statistics) and OpenFreeMap (map) to load the page; these technically receive your IP address.

Hosting (Cloudflare)

This website is hosted on the Cloudflare Workers platform of Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. When you open the page, Cloudflare processes the data needed to deliver it and to protect it against attacks, in particular your IP address, the date and time of access, the requested file and your browser's user agent. Legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is the secure and reliable delivery of the website. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and we have concluded a data processing agreement with Cloudflare. More: Cloudflare privacy policy.

Website statistics (Cloudflare Web Analytics)

To see how many people use Sun Atlas, which pages are visited and how fast the page loads, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a service of Cloudflare, Inc. (address above). A small script loaded from static.cloudflareinsights.com sends the visited address, the referring page, browser and device type, the country derived from the IP address and page-load timings to Cloudflare. According to Cloudflare, Web Analytics uses no cookies or local storage, does not fingerprint visitors and does not track them across websites or over time; we only see aggregated figures and cannot identify individual visitors. Map tiles (OpenFreeMap)

The basemap (land, borders, place names and fonts) is loaded directly by your browser from tiles.openfreemap.org, operated by Hyperknot Software Kft., Hungary. This transmits your IP address and browser information to OpenFreeMap. According to its privacy policy, OpenFreeMap uses no cookies or tracking, keeps access logs without IP addresses, and keeps error logs that may contain IP addresses for 7 days. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure and restriction of processing of your personal data, the right to data portability and the right to object to processing based on Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR.
